Killed In Action May 5th, 1968

"Charlie Co. 2nd plt. (Lt. Larry Ward’s plt.). Very sad story: He hailed from Middletown, NY about an hour north of me. We called him “Chief” because he was half Native American. Wounded several times and a profile kept him from returning to the field. In the relative safety of Cu Chi Basecamp for the remainder of his tour he decided to extend an extra 60 days in country so that he could ETS directly out of Vietnam and avoid doing his remaining stateside time. On the very evening before his chopper flight to Tan Son Nhut he was walking to the showers, towel wrapped around his waist and sundry kit in hand when an incoming 122mm rocket exploded killing him instantly."
