Comments: My name is Ray Bows. I served in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 with the 25th Infantry Division. I am the author of Vietnam Military Lore - Legends, Shadows and Heroes the story of the camps, compounds and airfields in Vietnam and who they were named in honor of. Recently on one of my trips, I located a small hoard of original DI's or crests of the 9th Infantry. These are not the kind you buy at the veteran's conventions but the real bronze McCoy's authorized by the Army Institute of Heraldry. They bear the imperial five toed Chinese dragon encircling a disc with the number 9 from the Manchu's China Campaigns and the legend "KEEP UP THE FIRE". Anyway, I've seen such originals sold for as much as 12 Bucks a piece and when I found this small hoard I figured I'd try to locate you guys to let you know that they are available. In short I'll sell one piece for $5, a pair for $8 and a set of three (two shoulders and hat) for $12 plus $3 per order to cover postage. Just drop a check in the mail to Ray Bows, 2055 Washington Street, Hanover, MASS 02339. I'll get them out the same day I receieve your request. Best wishes to all and "keep up the Fire". Comments: I arrived at C/4/9 at Ft Wainwright in May 1965. Loved Crosscountry skiing. Put on alert for RVN in December, no more skiing, we might get hurt!! Survived the trip to Hawaii on the General Walker. Me and everyone else talked to RALPH for 7 days of that trip. Jungle training in Hawaii was nice. Took a much nicer boat trip to Nam. Arrived in RVN in April (I think). Did a lot of sweating, walking, shooting, ducking, digging, cussing, and praying. Worked with a great bunch of guys. Lost a few along the way. God bless them. Left country early, September 66. Looking for friends from back then. Take care.

Comments: I served with C co. 1/9 INF 85-86, on a hill top called 4P1, just one half click from the southern barrier fence. I always felt that one year there was equal in its impact on me than all the years added together prior to that year. I often think of that year and wonder what ever happened to the guys who served there with me. One night while my patrol was moving to our ambush site inside the DMZ the point man spotted somebody with a red lens flash light, near that village that survived the war. We quickly set up in a hasty ambush but nothing more was seen. Me and the point man went foreward to where he saw the person but we found nothing. It was a strange night on the DMZ but not my strangest. Anyone have experiences like mine? The DMZ was a surreal place. It seemded like nobody else in the country south if the Imjin quite got what it was all about.

Comments: I attended the ROTC advanced at Ft. Lewis, Wa. I was assigned to the 9th regiment which was named after the famed 9th Inf Div. We were taught the history of the 9th Inf and we were told how the motto came about. I did well at advanced camp. Because of this, I received a replica of the "Manchu" belt buckle. Even though I am a female and will never be able to wear the belt buckle "Officially", I still have that Manchu spirit. "Can Do Manchu!" "Keep Up the Fire!".

Comments: Served w/ 2/9 Mortars from '86-'92. Was an idiot when I arrived, but the Manchus squared me away. Then they forced me to leave Planet Ord, by closing it. Lacking a home I became an 18B with 5th SFG(A). I got tired of MREs and decided to become a doctor. Now I'm a butterbar LT in medical school. When I finish here, I want to serve as a BN surgeon in a)an SF battalion b)an ABN Infantry BN or c)with the Manchus. Comments: Willy: Glad to get your e-mail. I was in the 4/9 from October 1968 to September 1969 and was in Delta Company. In my e-mail last night I mentioned that one of the guys I served with was Tim but later I remembered that it was Billy. After I got home I looked at the Mole City page closer and the pictures. There is a page with 3 pictures on it by Mike Smith. I have a picture of us being inside the chopper very similar to his but from a different angle. I believe he is the Mike I referred to in my e-mail. Please add me to your mailing list. Since some people did not leave at the same time I have often wondered what my happened to the guys in my platoon. I have not been to the Memorial yet. My wife keeps after me to go but I tell her I'm afraid I might see the names of some of the guys who were still there when I left. Now that I have starting corresponding with the rest of you I will probably make that trip. Everyone (even those who did not go to Nam) tell me it is quite an experience. In addition to my e-mail address here is my home address: 4409 W. Cielo Grande Glendale, AZ 85310 I would love to hear from anyone who believes they were in my company. Got to go. Need to prepare for today's lecture. Will chat again soon. Have a good day. 🙂 Jesse

Comments: I was a platoon sergeant with the Manchus during 1968-1969. One of the base camps I was at was Mole City. I was surprised to see the page on Mole City during my tour and the great pictures. I was in the 4/9 Manchus and am looking for anyone else that may have been in my platoon. The problem is, however, I can't remember which platoon I was with but would like to contact my buddies. I know one was named Mike, Tim, Rafael Colon from Puerto Rico, "Smitty" and many others. I have moved and have been unable to locate my Vietnam letters and pictures. I know that they're in a box somewhere, just can't seem to find the time to look for them. This will be one of my major priorities this year. I was unable to make it to the reunion but I enjoyed the reunion page and pictures and am planning on trying to attend the 1999 reunion. I am an instructor at Phoenix College and September is when our classes begin. I will try to make the effort. Guess that's all for now. If anybody remembers me, please e-mail me at my address. Will be glad to hear from you. Jesse Mireles

Comments: Dear Sir: I am apart of a Spanish American War Living History Group. We portray members of C-Company 9th Infantry, during the era 1898-1902. We are trying to fill in the empty spaces regarding the names of the principle officers and NCO's of C-Company during the period-April 98' to August 1898. If anyone might know of a source of the above info we would greatly appreciate it.

Having read the history of the gallant Manchus (and how they got their name) I am so grateful and proud to be remembered by the members of the 9th. Thank you. I have a section on my home page called "Apocalypse Then: A Vietnam Diary" which pays honor to the guys who served in 'Nam through rememberances of my experiences entertaining over there. I'll be adding a link to your page (and Willy's) to make sure that my audience can find their way to you. If you'd like to do the same, feel free to grab one of my banners on the "Links" page. I will never forget the simple acts of courage -- displayed daily -- by the men of the 4th Battalion 9th Infantry. I am so proud to have been a small part of the Manchus. Comments: If, as they say, it only takes a spark to get a fire going...maybe we should call you "Matchbook Willy"...Wow! And you said you don't ever dream anymore. But you did, and look where it has taken you. Yes, it is a pain in the royal ass sometimes. But, my friend...you are touching lives...you're bringing people full circle to a place where they are finding an overdue homecoming and brotherhood. Whether you anticipated being in the position you are curently in...that of adored leader and trusted friend to many..it has to be a good feeling...and you deserve a pat on the back...and a kiss on the cheek, (of your choice, of course!) I'm proud of your efforts and awed by your talent to do what you do...Ame

Comments: I have signed in for my father, Thomas Rutledge. He joined up in March of 1942. He landed at Safi with the 47th in November '42, and stayed in action until mustered out on disability after V-E day. He won 8 campaign stars, a bronze arrowhead and a bronze star. Because of a training (jump school)injury he drove a half-track through, ahead and around. If anyone remembers "Troubadour" from Mississippi he's still here and kicking, and would enjoy hearing if anyone else made it this far. Typed by his daughter Teresa Rutledge

Comments: Actually I was referred by a troop of irate Chinese girl scouts who had had their eye on this domain name. They agreed however that this was a first class job and worthy of the Manchu name. One question for WILLY - Is the coollist down during this transition or am I just screwing up again when I try to use it? For anyone planning to go to the get-together Jan 16 in Chicago, please email the following info. to me for nametags: Name & nickname (if any) Present home city and state. Job description - rifleman, platoon leader, M60, squad leader, etc. Month & year that service with 4/9th began and ended. Radio call (if any). Unit - company, platoon, squad, etc. WILLY, you've done it again! Great job! KUTF Mitch
